Macaws

We have various different species of Macaws. Click for more info about each:

Greenwing Macaws »

Greenwing macaws are the second largest species of macaw. They can have a body length of up to 39 inches, a wingspan of up to 49 inches, and they can weigh between 1,250 and 1,700 grams, which is pretty darn big! Greenwings are also considered to be one of the friendliest birds in the macaw family. This docile nature and large size has earned this parrot the nickname of “Gentle Giant.”

They can be extremely empathetic with their owners too.  After a long day, sometimes my babies will climb up on the couch with me and just place their wing around my shoulder as if to say, “Aww Mom, it’s OK now.”  Despite their large size, they do quite well in families, and with smaller children. They are normally a very good ‘pass around’ pet, if trained this way from once they come into your home.

Greenwing macaws are also extremely beautiful birds. Their vibrant plumage consists of brilliant reds, greens, and blues making the Greenwing one of the most spectacular birds on the market. They are very good talkers. If you are able to accommodate one of these birds, then you will find them to be an excellent pet and a loyal companion.  I would not suggest one of these parrots for a townhouse, condo, or apartment owner. As being a giant macaw, their call can be heard for long distances.

Caging requirements: Because of their large size, Greenwing macaws need roomy cages. A minimum of 4’ x 3’ x 6’ cage is required.

Blue and Gold Macaws »

The even temper, intelligence, and beauty of the Blue & Gold macaw has made it one of the most popular pet macaws in the world. Blue & Gold macaws are gentle in nature, and they love to be around people making them one of the easiest macaws to socialize. Blue & Gold macaws are also extremely beautiful parrots. Their blue wings and tail, black chin, golden under parts and green forehead make Blue & Gold macaws one of the most stunning and vibrant birds in the world.

On top of their docile nature and spectacular plumage, these macaws are also very intelligent. They have a reputation for having one of the best talking abilities of all the macaws and they are quite good at learning new tricks. Blue & Gold macaws are sure to make wonderful pets for all that can accommodate them.

Size and caging requirements: Blue & Gold macaws are one of the largest parrot species in the world. Adults can range from 30-35 inches in length, can weigh from 900g-1300g (2-3lbs) and can have wingspans ranging from 41-45 inches. Because of their large size, Blue & Gold macaws require fairly large cages of 36” x48” with bar spacing 1” to 1 ½”.

Scarlet Macaws »

The Scarlet macaws look similar to the Greenwing macaws, but have a beautiful yellow band of feathers on their wings.  The Scarlets are the only large parrot with a face bare of tiny facial feather lines. They have gorgeous tail feathers, which are the longest of all the macaws, and a body that is much more compact and lighter in weight than those of the other macaws.  Scarlet macaws are incredibly intelligent and can learn many tricks.  They are also excellent talkers. Our baby Scarlets are normally putting together words into sentences when the Greenwings and Blue & Golds are still working on their first words.

These birds need daily interaction and an extended amount of time out of their cage to exercise and play. A Scarlet naturally likes to take a tiny bit of skin between its beak and squeeze. A good breeder will work with the baby at a young age to teach it that this is not accepted behavior, and will also work with the new owner to follow up on the training. Through this type of behavior modification, a baby Scarlet will be as sweet-natured as a Blue & Gold.

Cage and size:  Scarlet macaws are generally around 35 inches long and as adults weigh between 900 and 1000 grams (1.9 to 2.2 pounds).  Like all macaws, Scarlet macaws require a large cage.  At a minimum, the cage should be 3 feet, by 3 feet, by 5 feet tall.

Catalina Macaws »

The Catalina Macaw is a hybrid macaw. It is the offspring of a Scarlet macaw and a Blue & Gold macaw. Our Catalinas are very colorful due to the father being the Scarlet, but they have the sweet nature of the Blue & Gold from their mother. The babies are very friendly, and normally are talking before they are totally weaned.

They are a very intelligent bird, and learn tricks quite easily. They are good with families, and love to be on the floor playing with everyone else. A Catalina’s color is astounding! The chest area is a vibrant sunset color, and the back and wing areas are a beautiful green. The tails have blue, green, and black on them.

Size and caging requirements: Catalina macaws are much of the same size as a Blue & Gold macaw. Because of their large size, Catalina macaws require fairly large cages of 36” x 48”, and should have a height of at least 65” with bar spacing 1” to 1 ½”.

"Purchasing Reggie, our blue and gold macaw from Christy was a wonderful experience. Not only did we get a GREAT bird but discovered a real friend. Christy puts her heart and soul in raising her babies and that has blessed us with a well adjusted, wonderful bird. I have called Christy numerous times since we brought Reggie home and she always has the answers that we need even when it comes to our other birds. We are thrilled with our entire Birdie Brains Aviary experience!!!"

  • "We purchased Olive, our Greenwing Macaw from Christy in 2010. Olive is a total sweetheart and warmed right up to my fiancé and me. After researching Macaw breeds and breeders off and on for over the last 7 years, Christy was the first breeder I felt comfortable with – she really knows her stuff and her personality is fabulous. Christy was more than patient in making sure Olive was weaning and did so at Olive's pace.  Both Christy and her helpers give much love and attention to their babies, using their names when addressing them - Olive even said her own name the second day we had her! She’s more than a breeder – she’s a mom. Her love and devotion to the babies resonates in her feedback here – her babies are happy, loving, healthy and well-adjusted."
